Flying Dragons (Odonates)

Our ephemeral ponds provide reproductive habitat not only for amphibians, but also dragonflies and damselflies (collectively referred to as Odonates). These aerial acrobats are predators. Larger species can catch small moths and even butterflies, but we forgive them, as mosquitos are a preferred food. Some have gorgeous, neon electric coloring, others intricate wing patterns. They are quite entertaining as they zip through the air, hunting for tiny insect prey.
